They’ve just released one of the most eagerly anticipated techno albums of the year. Now Spektre give us an exclusive insight into ‘Cyclic Operations’.
Rich & Paul name some of the seminal releases that have influenced their sound and the creation of ‘Cyclic Operations’.
Tears for Fears – ‘Mad World’

Paul: Listening to this from my mum’s record collection was probably my first exposure to electronic music and it’s still one of my favourite records to this day. We actually sampled the distinctive machine percussion on ‘Cloud Bending’ from our first album, and the drone bass in ‘Steel City Sunrise’ certainly has a bit in common with TFFs on ‘Mad World’.
New Order – ‘Blue Monday’

Rich: This is a seminal track that I will always list as a huge influence in my musical career and a massive source of inspiration for me personally. This track is the biggest selling 12″ single of all time and when you hear it you know exactly why. The distinctive 16th note kick drum intro, programmed on an Oberheim DMX, followed by the slightly out of time sequencer melody is absolutely unmistakable and one of the most recognisable starts to a track ever known. I will never forget the first time I heard it. Truly one of the best tracks ever made and I still play it in my sets to this day.
The Reese Project – ‘The Colour of Love (Underground Resistance 12” Mix)’

Paul: We were ending our sets a couple of years ago with Joris Voorn’s classic ‘Incident’ which samples the piano from this. Knowing the damage that a well aimed piano riff can do served as the inspiration for ‘Opus’ and it seems to be doing the job in our sets!
AMbassador – ‘The Fade’

Rich: The trance era was where I started my journey into the club scene and electronic music, so I couldn’t cite my influences without including a trance record from the early 90′s. This one in particular stands out for me as one of my favourites. It is such a classic record, but also demonstrates the way that subtle melody works in a track to great effect. With probably one of the most uniquely simplistic and yet strangely memorable riffs I’ve ever encountered, this is a perfect example of the type of tracks we listened to when working on ‘Sense In Madness’ and ‘Memory Effect’.
Maetrik – ‘The Entity’

Rich: Maetrik/Maceo Plex is one of our favourites to listen to in the studio. His productions in recent years have certainly been a cut above the rest technically and he really stands out as one of the best artists in recent times. His track ‘The Entity’ is a slick, dark and atmospheric delve into his distinctive style of techno that was an instant source of inspiration for us on tracks such as ‘Reverion’ and ‘Ghosts in the Machine’. In terms of where he sets the bar production-wise, his tracks are always a great reference point to compare your own material to.
Hardfloor – ‘Acperience 1’
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SGH_ZwGcZ0
Paul: The all-time masters of the 303 and 909. Their Mory Kante ‘Yeke Yeke’ remix was probably one of the tracks that turned me onto the more underground styles of electronic music as a teenager, but this is their crowning glory in my opinion. You can hear Hardfloor’s influence all over the drum programming of our stuff (as well as most other techno producers!) and we even snuck a sneaky bit of acid onto the new album on ‘Sense in Madness’.
